What's
up with the CMTC?
Spring 2019 Update
Hello fellow tennis players. You've reached the landing page for the Crape Myrtle Tennis Classic, a GLTA-sanctioned tennis tournament held in Raleigh, NC. The CMTC ran from 2004-2015, with 1000+ registered players joining us from all over the US and Europe.
So what happened?
In 2 short words: Joaquin and Matthew. These 2 hurricanes produced record rainfalls over the Carolinas and the Southeast, and as extremely bad luck would have it, each occurred on the CMTC weekend. The effects of Joaquin caused us to have a significantly shortened tournament on the few indoor courts we had available in 2015, and Matthew forced us to cancel the tournament entirely for 2016. While statistically, 2 rainouts over 13 years of tournaments isn't all that bad, having them in consecutive years not only impacted us financially, but left many of our long-time friends disheartened and concerned about future CMTC rainouts. As a result, the TTC Board of Directors decided to put future CMTCs on hold.
Are you coming back?
We hope so! In 2019, we held a tournament as part of the Stonewall National Tournament. The tennis event was also GLTA sanctioned and run very much like a GLTA tournament. We truly appreciated seeing all our old tennis friends and getting to make several new ones too!
Going forward for 2020+, we are working with the GLTA on resuming a more "CMTC-like" tournament, although dates and venue are TBD. Many friendships were formed and good times had in the 12 CMTCs that were held, and we do miss having our out of town guests travel to Raleigh for a weekend of fun and southern hospitality. So stay tuned! In the meantime, feel free to look around this site for an archive of what past CMTC's were like.
Last, we want to thank all our past participants...especially those who returned year after year after year....for all your support and well wishes. We do hope we'll have the opportunity to welcome you back to Raleigh in the not too distant future!
