Welcome to the 1st Annual Hilton Head Island Legends Clay Court Championships! We are excited to be able to host this first-of-a-kind age division only tournament. Continue reading below for more background. Additional tournament specifics can be found on our Tournament Information page.
Why an Age-Division Only Tournament?
We love our young GLTA players. They bring energy
and excitement to the circuit, and will become the next generation
of advocates to promote diversity and inclusion throughout the sport
of tennis. That said, a 50+ year old playing against
a 20-something doesn't always result in the best outcome...for the 50-year
old, that is!
Many GLTA tournaments have already adopted age-division
singles draws, and we applaud this decision. In this
case, Tournament Director and GLTA Board Member Scott Kauffman
wanted to create a dedicated event to reward and celebrate the
circuit's "more senior" players. The small and welcoming venue
on Hilton Head Island provided just that, and the rest is history.
Who's Running the Tournament?
With no sanctioned club on the island, the GLTA has asked Scott and the Triangle Tennis Club (TTC) to manage tournament operations, with their support and backing. We promise we'll bring the same southern hospitality we've had at the Crape Myrtle Tennis Classic down with us to this wonderful island setting.
Why Hilton Head?
Why not! You need only look at the
photos on our front page and see why HHI is the perfect place to
host a tournament. The island offers all the major
amenities of a city, yet is so tastefully decorated and preserved
that it makes you feel as if you're living in a resort 24x7.
Excited yet?
Several of the committee members have
had the opportunity to visit and vacation in Palmetto Dunes over the years, and have fallen in love with the area. We have
a feeling you will too!
What to Expect?
If you have a lot of stress in your life, we hope you can leave it on the mainland! Given the small-size draws and resort-like atmosphere, we want this to be a very laid back and low-key tournament. You do need to show up on-time for your matches, but other than that, we hope you can kick back, relax, and enjoy a few days away from the real world!
